# The Sera Thesis — why FX moves onchain first

> Banking is not replaced all at once; it is dismantled in a fixed order, and cross-border FX falls first. Stablecoins changed the substrate under the banks the way smartphones and 3G changed it under the telcos.

## FX is a black box

Foreign exchange is the largest market on earth — roughly 35× the NYSE's annual volume and well over 200× global crypto — and it runs on closed bank rails built before the internet. Same intermediaries, same up-to-five-days settlement, since the 1970s.

**Same dollar, two paths.** Through correspondent banking, $1,000 leaves a sender and $850 reaches the receiver: Bank A $985, correspondent $950, correspondent $915, Bank B $880. That is 15% extracted by the hops. Settled on-chain through Sera, $1,000 leaves and $998 arrives — about 0.2%, at interbank.

Even modern fintechs (Wise, Revolut, Stripe) ride the same SWIFT and correspondent rails underneath. They hide the friction; they do not remove it.

## What the middle costs, by who is standing in it

- Retail / airport money changers — 5–15%
- Neobanks, crypto cards — 1–5%
- Fintechs (Wise, Revolut, Airwallex) — 0.5–2%
- Prime brokerage (SMEs, MNCs) — 0.05–1.5%
- Tier-2 interbank FX desks — 0.01–0.05%
- **Sera, settling at interbank on-chain — 10–30bps**

## Nine phases of banking replacement

1. **Cross-border payments** — already live, the vanguard of the migration. *Sera is here.*
2. **Payment gateways** — Stripe, Adyen, the rails behind every online checkout.
3. **Lending** — small-scale first, scaling as real-world assets move on-chain.
4. **Savings & structured products** — yield-bearing stablecoins, on-chain structured notes.
5. **FX derivatives** — programmable, composable, 24/7.
6. **eWallets** — the mass adoption layer; bank-account convenience, fully on-chain.
7. **Merchant POS** — stablecoin acceptance at the till.
8. **Processors** — Visa, Mastercard; sheltered by distribution, rails rebuilt underneath.
9. **Fundraising** — last, slowest, hardest; relationship moats compound.

Phase nine is where relationship-driven incumbents live longest. Their moat is relationships rather than technology, but the rails underneath them get rebuilt anyway.

## The WhatsApp moment for banking

In 2012 telcos owned messaging. Six years later their messaging revenue had collapsed and carriers were dumb pipes for somebody else's product. WhatsApp shipped free IP-based messaging on a substrate — smartphones plus 3G — that telcos had built but could not monopolise.

Banks are there now. They own FX through correspondent networks and nostro/vostro accounts, charging 2–5% spreads on roughly $9.6 trillion of daily flow, because nobody else could touch the substrate. Public chains plus multi-currency stablecoins are the smartphone and 3G of money.

Already remade in twenty years: post mail, travel agencies, department stores, telcos, hospitality, transportation. Finance — still pending.

## Why a CLOB and not an AMM

Forked AMMs can copy contracts but not the architecture. Off-curve pricing was never designed for stablecoin FX: pegs drift, stable pools misprice the drift, volatile pools quote wide, and liquidity providers bleed impermanent loss either way. Only a CLOB-native, multi-currency, non-custodial protocol can hold the settlement seat at the centre of $9.6T a day.
